Last week I had the opportunity to visit the choir vault with the Minster team
The self-supporting structure fills the entire choir, an impressive construction made of steel and wood. The narrow ladder rungs are surprisingly easy to climb. (Just don’t look down).
The choir vault at Bern Minster was not affected by iconoclasm
We’ll probably never know if Niklaus Manuel Deutsch’s substantial contribution to the choir vault was one of the reasons why the figures survived the iconoclasm of the Reformation eleven years later in 1528. What we do know is that Niklaus Manuel was a strong supporter of the Reformation in Bern. What’s also certain is that the authorities arranged the Reformation iconoclasm, because they wanted to retain control and be able to ensure that the expensive works of art financed by the city, such as the Last Judgement at the main entrance and even the keystones in the choir vault, were spared from the religiously motivated destruction.
